Hospitals, clinics and complete medical services are available in all major cities and some small towns. More than 90 percent of the population is covered by the Social Security System. There is either a public clinic or hospital in almost every area of the country, making medical care accessible to everyone including foreigners. Health insurance is national and is open for anyone. There is no exclusion to Costa Rican health care. Due to the fact that there is only one insurer, there is very little bureaucracy. There is no rules regarding which doctor you have to see or which hospital you can go to. There are over 100 hospitals in Costa Rica that are able to serve patients in need as the situation calls for.
Pharmacies are abundant and there are very few drugs that require a prescription. Because there are no companies that capitalize off of illnesses and treatments. Many safe drugs that require a prescription in the U.S. can be bought at low prices without any hassle.
